The European Lipoprotein Club (ELC) is a worldwide network of basic scientists and clinicians involved or interested in lipoprotein research. The ELC currently comprises over 700 scientists from more than 20 countries in Europe and abroad, and the number grows every year. The ELC organizes and hosts an annual scientific meeting at a beautiful location in Tutzing, Germany.
Mission and governance
The ELC was established in 1977 in order “to promote active participation, collaboration and exchange of ideas concerning basic and clinical research on the structure, function and metabolism of lipoproteins in health and disease”. ELC’s governing body is the Organising Committee, currently with 11 members from European countries and led by the chairman Prof Alexander Bartelt, Munich, Germany. The ELC receives full administrative support from the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS).
Annual scientific meeting
The ELC organizes one scientific meeting every year, usually in the second week of September.
Particular emphasis is on an active participation and in-depth discussion between researchers in an informal atmosphere. Since 1980, the meetings have been held at the Evangelische Akademie in Tutzing, Germany.
The oral program consists of approx. five topics, selected by the Organising Committee, with a Keynote Lecture
and four additional invited speakers. In addition, posters are presented during a highly interactive Wine & Science session. Anyone interested and involved in research in the lipid and lipoprotein field is invited to submit an abstract for the meeting. Participants are selected on the relevance and scientific merit of their abstracts, and approximately 30 abstracts are chosen for an oral presentation. The number of participants is limited to 110.
